@mixedchocolate1012 When I said THIS happened while I was working it took me a while to find the news article but I found it!The Montana Snowbowl patrol in a post on the group’s blog yesterday warned skiers and snowboarders against jumping off the chairlift. The post stemmed from Saturday when Snowbowl’s Grizzly chairlift broke down for more than an hour and patrol had to perform rope evacuations. Apparently a father/son duo decided to exit the chairlift somewhere around the middle of the ride.

@mixedchocolate1012 ~towers move up and down more than at the Sheaves (towers) but the energy will remain the same. And btw, sure a whip makes noise from the sonic boom, I was trying to get your narrow mind to grasp HOW a flick of your wrist can cause THAT much energy at the end. You might wanna do a little research before making comments to someone who actually works on and fixes lifts.

Someone took the wrong class Physical Education is not the same as Physics lmao. Doppler effect causes a noise from sumthin like a train to sound higher in pitch when it is approaching than when it is receding!? and the wave in a whip doesn't get bigger just faster, that speed is what causes the sonic boom... anyways now your left with
"a long stretched cable under load. you release load and you create stored energy. That energy will increase..." Yeah alright... cool story bro!

@mixedchocolate1012 I was a lift mechanic for years dude. Trust me, not only can it happen, it has. Btw, you kind of proved my point.. A long stretched cable under load. you release load and you create stored energy. That energy will increase(Doppler effect) as it gets closer to the fulcrum(the sheave assembly). Its sort of like cracking a whip, what starts small gets huge. We have had a slight breeze derail a lift before. Oh and Asian friend and ski lifts? pffft.

I doubt it was even their fault... anyways, you just said it yourself "They didn't jump but were bouncing" Bounce on an old chairlift constantly and the increasing amount of vertical sway might pop it off but you would have to be like standing up and going all out? LoL
Think about it tons of people/equip. are dangling on this rope, 4 any1 to tell me that a 150lb's jumping off is going to make a difference.. Yeah right, even my Asian friend says it doesn't add up lol, Taboo Myth.

@mixedchocolate1012 The hell it won't. This happened up here once. Some kids didn't jump but were bouncing a chair up and down and it derailed. Thankfully no one got hurt.

LMFAO jumping off a lift wont pop the cables off hahahaaaaa!!

What happened to the board man!!
That was pretty cool ...
... but there is a reason you'll get your pass pulled for that. Especially with an old school double like this, suddenly unweighting the chair can make the cable pop off at the towers, which is really bad news if it happens. Best case it suts down the lift; worst case someone dies.
Granted, the cable usually stays on, but that's the main reason they don't want people jumping off.
Just so you know.
