One of Memphis' biggest problems continues to be its bicycle unfriendliness. Between the lack of bike lanes and greenways, the oblivious or downright hostile motorists, and the fragmented suburban sprawl, Memphis has not lived up to its bicycling potential. But, as usual in this city, where the powers-that-be have failed, the grassroots take the lead.

Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop was founded in June of 2002 with the mission to promote the most energy efficient form of transportation known to science. From the weekend pedaler to the worker looking for a cheap commute, the shop has helped more than 1,500 people build or rehab a bike to fit their needs. The community that has grown up around the shop was given a huge boost this year when Memphis was chosen to be one of the hosts for the 2009 Bicycle Film Festival. Today, Revolutions stays true to its original mission: teach a man to ride, and he'll go where he wants.

  • @Valibus I had just gotten the bike, so I had not enough time yet to invest in a U lock (?) or whatever the best lock was at the time. My friend had one and his bike was never stolen. It is better to ride a bike in the county. Still drivers have the same attitudes 'get the F off the road idiot!' So our bike never leaves the room. It is a plain exercise bike ^^

  • @hvislysettaros2010 Bikes that are properly locked up don't get stolen. Every big city has that issue but if you don't use the right security then it's going to happen to you wherever. Same with the drivers. Be cautious, but you shouldn't let them scare you off the road. The more bike riders they see they more they will have to accept that cyclists have a right to the road as well.

  • Having a bike is better than depending on a car in most cases (except when the weather is bad of course). Unfortunately since this is Memphis, then bikes get stolen all the time. Happened to me while attending U of M. Most Memphis drivers are dumb and drive with their heads up their arses. It was always so risky biking around town most of the time. I had to give it up. :(
