"how little they have to do.." Apple reinvented music distribution. They're the number one distribution channel for music. If it weren't for them, artists would be getting even less than they would now. Also, many indies artists are now able to mass distribute their music, without the record labels' help.
You're right in a sense, when you're an innovator, you do very "little."
