Romney Suspends Presidential Run
Mitt Romney's exit from the presidential race yesterday is receiving front-page coverage in major newspapers, and led all three network newscasts last night. Analysts are portraying Romney's move as ensuring that John McCain will be the GOP presidential nominee, even as the Arizona senator continues to face opposition among conservatives. The Los Angeles Times, for example, reports on its front page that McCain "effectively clinched the Republican nomination for president Thursday when...Romney abandoned his candidacy, leaving Mike Huckabee as a final but minor obstacle to a resolution of the yearlong race." The Baltimore Sun says Romney and Huckabee "had been splitting the vote of social conservatives and others on the Republican right who remain cool to McCain," but "Huckabee faces long odds against the better-funded McCain, who has been trying to rally conservatives and members of the Republican establishment behind his candidacy." The AP says, "With weekend contests in Louisiana and Kansas up next, McCain has secured 707 delegates, more than halfway to the 1,191 needed to win the nomination. Romney has 294 and Huckabee 195. Paul, the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman, had only 14 -- and no chance to catch McCain."
McClatchy notes Romney appeared at the Conservative Political Action Committee annual conference "for what was supposed to be a clarion call to conservatives to rally behind him as the anti-McCain." Instead, Romney "ended his stump speech by announcing that he was quitting to allow McCain to start taking on the Democrats for a fall campaign." Likewise, the CBS Evening News reports Romney had been "welcomed as their champion" by those in attendance, but "joy soon turned to stunned disbelief as Romney announced he was suspending his campaign."
ABC World News recounted that on Wednesday Romney "held a long meeting at his campaign office. The decision at that point seemed to be to stay in." But then Romney "went home, thought about it, and decided there was just no real path left for him to win the nomination." The Wall Street Journal reports Romney "left the door open to a future presidential candidacy, comparing himself to Ronald Reagan, who lost the Republican nomination in 1976 but captured it four years later."
Governor Mitt Romney is a RINO. He supports stringent gun laws. His Health care overhaul pales in comparison to the atrocity of Obamacare, but it was similar. He has never expressed public regret for this. He told Michigan residents at an event there that the financial services bailout was absolutely necessary. He stated you said that the Republican Party needs to pass "immigration reform" (amnesty) in order to attract new voters. He’d vote for Obama! watch?v=jPGnJmbDq08

I agree that libertarians should take a more pro-active approach. The LP needs a marketing plan to work on our image and put us in a position that will allow us to appeal to mainstream USA. We are largely perceived as lunatics, conspiracy theorists, pot smokers, anti-establishment, etc.. My fear is that RP's efforts will be in vain... no change in the GOP as it will continue leaning to the center and no new supporters for the LP. LP needs much more than 3-4% to be taken seriously.

Obaid, you have made many good points. I was never of the opinion that RP would get the GOP nomination. However, a better share of electoral votes would have given him leverage on the GOP. As time progresses there are few differences between democrats and republicans. McCain is a prime example as he is more of a centrist than a republican... as RP is more libertarian than republican. RP should run as an independent/LP. The GOP has lost its way... they need to sit it out for 4 and reflect.

I agree, most libertarians I see are these amoebic people that hide and do not vote on principle. They're like relics. Even Paul at first was softspoken. No, we need to first get angry, outspoken and get out there. I agree with your video Obaidkarki, very good points.

I like hearing your points of view, but I do not believe any threats or bribes were made. Giuliani was predicted to do well before the primaries, but the jig was up on him, and this shown in his number of actual votes. It must have been humiliating to do so poorly, and with little chance of gaining ground, he dropped out. Romney was financing a lot of his campaign with his own money. He had spent over 40 million and was trailing McCain like 3 to 1 in delegates. I think he just cut his losses.

The Democrats will continue the next phase of the oil war and I predict there will be another CIA staged attack on the American Populace in order to bring in the draft. The dollar will begin to devalue as drug lords and foreign oil companies (Valenzuela) will demand payment in Euros instead of greenbacks
