Thanks. I did take for granted that the mounted mics are 2 MONO mics. But the mic emblem only showed 1 mic at that input. Thanks for the replay. Best to you.

The input socket is STEREO. The inbuilt mics are also stereo.

So it only has a MONO mic input? for external?

Hello, I was looking into two Sony units and was glad to find your review from watching your steady cam videos. I was really undecided between the 412 and the icd-ux512. Wondering if you looked at that as well? I picked the 512 but have 30 days to return. Are you still happy with the 412? Anything popped up since this review was done?
Thanks from Canada!!

Greetings from Scotland.
I chose the 412 because of price, and the larger more powerful front-mounted speaker. The only disappointment is the lack of screen illumination. Overall, I'm very pleased with it. The microphones are not directional cardioid types, so the stereo effect is quite subtle, created the spacing between them. A positive aspect of this is that omnidirectional mics are less susceptible to handling and wind noise.

It's connected with a USB cable, to download and upload. The recorder shows up in 'My Computer'.
In this movie, I synchronised the audio and video in Windows Movie Maker. It;s a good simple programme.

How were you satisfied with this item's ability to record speech in a loud environment? Let's say, recording an interview in a bar. Thanks, I'm considering buying it.

It should work well in most environments. It has low, medium and high microphone sensitivities. Does nice recordings. if you look around, you'll get it for a little over £50 online (UK).
