The movie was made in 1946, but it was supposed to be set in the early to mid 1940's. All the able bodied men were off to war, meaning most of the women were lonely.

You are supposed to infer whatever you want to about the scene... YOu could have it remain chaste, they could be making out, or having wild off the wall sex.

He is supposed to be a lady's man, so we are supposed to infer they had sex.

@adorabilly the big sleep was written in 1939 it was supposed to have taken place a little after prohibition ended hence rusty reagan the bootlegger (alcohol smuggler) was out of a job and looking into other forms of seedy business

@adorabilly Sorry to disappoint you but, Marlowe never had sex with the clerk at Acme —You're rewriting the character and what you believe is implied —He’s not a player —Marlowe's a single 33 year old PI who used to work for the DA —Fired for insubordination. Handsome, charming, cynical & street smart. Loves his work but shows contempt for women. When he's not smoking or drinking, he's nursing a hangover & working the Sternwood case —(will finish in secondary post)

This is one great scene. She begins formally, warms up, and gives over to it, then at the end, if you notice how she drops her arm, she's dissapointed he's leaving just like that, like he will never see here again. Wow.

some very fine touches by Hawks: they were definitely not in the script: he let Malone just run with it, first glancing up and down over Bogart describing Geiger after leaning into him near enough for a kiss, obvious true, but effective: then the whammo, that little ballet she does pulling down the shade, turning her back in a near squat instead of just yanking it down with her hand, that was veddy veddy sexual, the stuff with her glasses coming off was stupid, however, not nearly so good

What happened to the beginning when it showed him in the other bookstore asking the first lady if she had the book? I loved how he acted way differently in the first bookstore then completely turned it around in the second...
