Welcoming Conversations, a new project spearheaded by Active Voice and funded by the Ford Foundation, will use a repurposed version of the acclaimed documentary "The Education of Shelby Knox" (2005) with a never-before-seen "5 years later" epilogue shot just this past December 2008, as a catalyst to help parents and teens across California have more open dialogue around sexuality, inclusion and affirmation. The film, which documents one Christian family's difficult transformation, will be the centerpiece of a statewide effort that seeks to build greater understanding of the needs of marginalized and threatened communities.

Hi Shelby--- bless you for braving all the firestorms which you've endured while promoting both social compassion and sexual enlightenment. I grew up in a rural CA town a LOT like Lubbock; religious youth-groups got used more for babysitting than actual teaching, and placating uptight parents came first with a lot of clerics. A close pastor friend bucked the trend, and got exiled to a remote AZ village for his efforts. But things change, as your new documentary shows. Keep up the fight!

Shelby, I applaud your bravery and honesty. I didn't know anyone my age in the '60s when I went to high school. Remember Matthew 22, 36-40: Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
