After nearly 50 years since withdrawn from BR, 30 years of being a static exhibit at Bressingham and 4 years of overhaul at Southall and Crewe. LMS rebuilt Royal Scot Class no. 6100 'Royal Scot' returned to steam on the West Somerset Railway and became the main star of the Spring Steam Gala.

Because of subsequent delays in finishing the final touches to the loco the Scot wasn't able to run during the first weekend of the gala, but was put on display at Bishops Lydeard during that time. She ran a series of test runs and was finally able to run during the second weekend of the gala.
Apart from the missing LMS initials yet to be installed and painted on the tender, 6100 is now a completed locomotive. One of two preserved to this day.

In this film 6100 is seen climbing up the summit to Crowcombe Heathfield at Norvis Bridge. After a brief stop at Washford 6100 makes its way down the bank en route to Blue Anchor. The final scene concludes with 6100 doubleheading with 45231 'The Sherwood Forester' at Kentsford between Watchet and Washford.

6100 is famously known for her visit to North America in 1933, when built as a parallel boilered loco. She took part in the Century of Progress Exposition held in Chigago, she toured 11,194 miles through Canada and the United States. She wears special commemorative plates on her front driving wheel splashers, in commemoration for her North American tour.

  • I wonder if they'll paint her in the right livery this time when they've finished overhauling her again.

  • Hmm... I doubt it, but it may happen in future you never know.

  • i remember standing on the footplate talking to the original driver when the royal scot was a static exibit at skegness butlins camp 40years ago glad to see it restored to its former glory

  • Its great to see her run again after so long. And good to know that you saw the loco at Skegness all them years ago. I admire the loco in every aspect, hoping to get more shots of her when she goes on the mainline.
