This is Charlie Parker's "Au Privave" from the Hal Leonard "Jazz Play Along" series. Played on a '95 Rickenbacker 4003 fretless bass with nylon tapewound strings.

  • Pure awesome :)

  • That's some very impresive bass playing, sir. Keep up the good work.

  • @fretnaught4003 I've build several maple-fingerboarded basses, and I've not had to epoxy them, since I play with flatwound strings. though I do a poly finish, just to keep some dirt off, and keep them easy to clean.

  • @tylerwylie ...with "miracle of the internet" you can find several tapewounds on either rounds or flats, but to me it seems there's a few more choices in the flatwound variety...though I've never tried confirming that "scientifically" :)

  • @fretnaught4003 Most tapewounds are roundwound covered in nylon I thought, only LaBella's are actual flat wounds covered in nylon tape.

  • @eddievhfan1984 I like maple too. I haven't had any first hand experience with fretless maple, but the word is that most people end up neeeding to epoxy those as well.

  • @fretnaught4003 I have a love affair with maple. How does that fare?

  • @eddievhfan1984 I had a fender jazz bass with a rosewood fretboard that I decided to epoxy and it definitely helped to protect and extend the life of the fingerboard (the rickenbacker fingerboard comes with an epoxy finish). If you have a choice, the best bet is a "hard" wood for the fingerboard like ebony or pau ferro (as opposed to the "soft" rosewood). I have a pau ferro fingerboard on my stingray 5 (strung with roundwounds) and with even heavy use has proven to be very durable.
