Congratulations, Barack Obama! And bye-bye, Hillary. But don't be sad, die-hard Hillary supporters—you've still got a presumptive presidential nominee who values Hillary's experience and her contributions to his campaign, who's willing to take Hillary at her word and rely on her judgment, who's eager to enlist her in his campaign to get to the White House.
That would be John McCain, of course. His campaign is already sending around the video of Hillary helpfully asserting that both she and McCain have "passed the commander in chief test," while Obama brings Americans nothing but "a speech he gave in 2002."Hillary, demand what's due to you: a slot as McCain's running mate! Hell, you've done so much for McCain already—you deserve it.

John McCain praises Hillary Clinton, appealing to her supporters who have said they might vote for him, and lambastes Barack Obama, who is likely to best her tonight for the Democratic nomination. "Senator Clinton has earned great respect for her tenacity and courage," McCain plans to say tonight in Louisiana, according to speech excerpts released by his campaign. "The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received. As the father of three daughters, I owe her a debt for inspiring millions of women to believe there is no opportunity in this great country beyond their reach. I am proud to call her my friend."

From the re-branded green background to the silly attempt to capitalize on Democratic divisions to the Clintonian cooptation of an Obama meme - "a leader we can believe in" - McCain's opening gambit in the general election was, in my judgment, underwhelming. It wasn't the content as such. McCain will rightly brag of his support for the surge (if not the war) and will have some reason to claim he is not running for George W. Bush's third term. It was the delivery and the response that threw me off. To be blunt, McCain can be a pretty bad public speaker. He has a mild, relatively high-pitched voice and an uncomfortable way of smiling broadly and speaking softly as he makes tough attacks on his opponent. Those attacks were greeted by louder boos against Obama than cheers for McCain. It was a strange mix of aggression and calm, of cheeriness and anger. A little weird.

The attempt to describe Obama as too big a risk is probably McCain's best bet; and his endeavor to rebrand himself as the candidate of real change is necessary. But he will fail if he tries to describe Obama as a leftist who can't be trusted - because the next generation doesn't get these categories and the older generation is exhausted by them. And it is simply difficult stylistically for a man of McCain's age and experience to describe himself as a more credible change agent than this young insurgent. McCain has to try this change meme; but it doesn't thrill his base and it doesn't immediately connect to the middle. This was, in my judgment, an inauspicious start.

  • Lol who spamed this?

  • How is this spam any more than half of the comments that end up on these political videos?

  • Coke and Pepsi r owned by the same company???

    Werd...thats crazi

  • They cant find anything of substance to attack Obama on, hence they intentionally misconstrue an innocuous remark and convert it into a derogatory, offensive remark, when it's clearly just a metaphor that has been used by McCain and is often used in American politics

Wake up American, the world is watching.

  • FUCK MSNBC AND OBLAHMA

  • Ok, so where do your stats come from that say McCain vote against equal pay for women?? And killing shouldn't be anyone's right.dont try to turn that into a woman bashing thing.

  • Let's all hope Obama wins. I hope that when he does he let's us all know what the other 7 states are.

What a lucky guy Obama is! He's been to 57 states and the rest of us have only been to 50.. And, let's not forget that he didn't go to Hawaii or Alaska...

So does that mean there are 59 states? Can any democrats answer that one for me?
