Yeah, I see where you're coming from. But I think the song is about a girl who is living in a shallow world, hence the title "Big Machine". The world is like a big machine where everything is superficial. And she is just trying to make it in the world, and feels as if no one can understand her because they're too busy being materialistic and shallow.

@MidnyteFox Dont think that ecstacy has to mean or relate to any drugs. This song may or may not relate to any artificial stimulus. I will tell you this! It very much touches on the urge to live, to be young, or to feel life at any age. drugs may be a part of that depending on your life-style. No doubt here the Goo Goo Dolls provide a much braoder scope to interact with life and true feelings.
