Los Cristianos, Tenerife. With a touch more restraint than its neighbour, Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos holidays attract those who want to do more than soak up the sun all day, and turn the lights out early each evening. For many, it offers the perfect balance of holiday diversions, against a backdrop of imposing mountains to one side, and dazzlingly-clear waters to the other.

Tenerife's oldest 'holiday town', Los Cristianos has developed with great sensitivity, ensuring that many of the reasons people flocked here originally are still to be found - even if you do have to look a little harder these days. So, amid the low-rise holiday accommodation, you can still find pretty, flower-lined streets, weaving past silent, shuttered Canarian villas, their wooden balconies hinting at the island's Moorish past. In the cobbled squares you can cool off with a drink, and watch the town go about its business.
