The song "Greensleeves" was written by King Henry the Eighth of England, and there is a Christmas song written to the same tune, called "What Child is This?"
My Great-Great-Grandfather, Richard Atkins McDonald, was in the Battle of Vicksburg.I am very proud of him, and I know I would have loved him. RIP, Great-Great- Grandfather!!!
The toll at Vicksburg: and estimate 30,000 confederate prisoners. Days later port hudson surrendered and the Union have full control of the Mississippi river for the duration of the war. The confederacy was split in two: the western confederate states were cut off. And Grant was on his way up towards total command of all union forces
Vicksburg was the key as president Lincoln said. Whoever controlled it and other key ports on the MIssissippi, they control the whole river itself. it was were Gen U.S. Grant perfected his skills of siege warfare: Cutting off supplies and reinforcements and any kind of help to the defending confedrate garrison and pounded and starved them into submission. despite several failures, Grant did not give up. Vicksburg surrended July 4th, 1863.
Hi, I'm sorry it would have been by gg-grand uncle. His name was Robert Davis and died Aug 23 at Vicksburg. His brother Edward Evan also fought there but came back to Iowa and lived as a successful Welsh farmer.

For many years Vicksburg did not celebrate on the 4th of July, because that was the day the city surrendered.
