The Heritage referred to is the Stone-Campbell Movement from which came the Disciples of Christ, Independent Christian Churches, and noninstrumental Churches of Christ; Doc is speaking at a Church of Christ college: human reason and revelation; the Enlightenment's assumption is that Reason is autonomous and has priority; God as the unmoved Mover; Mankind as the center of the cosmos rather than God; God of the gaps and Newtonian mechanics: "ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart"; feelings are not a legitimate criteria for evaluation; autonomous for math and scientific method: God no longer needed as a reference; sin reduced to neurosis and must be socio-economically evaluated per Marx; middle-class of democratic capitalism is being destroyed by taxation; government and the care for the poor; Christian worldview encountering all categories of the culture--it's all about evangelism; saving people rather than just "souls"; once you lose God of Creation he become simply God of the gaps and then merely God of religious feeling and private experience to try to protect the faith from science, ala Schleiermacher; the Creation is extremely complex; 18th century--Kant and the Age of Reason; education keeps costing more and more for less and less; God needed to explain the validity of mathematics; nature as a deterministic machine leaves no room for miracles and precision/predictive prophecies in the Bible
