On January 4 2010 a massive slope failure in northern Pakistan destroyed the villages of Atta Abad and Sarat, and blocked the Hunza River to a depth of over 120 metres. A lake has formed behind the landslide barrier, inundating parts of several agricultural villages, and flooding the region's only through road - the Karakoram Highway - for over 20 kilometres. Some 20,000 residents of villages upstream from the slide and lake are cut-off from most household supplies, social, educational and health services, markets, and employment. A small number of government and privately-operated boats ply the barrier lake, providing limited cargo and passenger service when diesel is available.
Stunning. Heaven, daobncndcb should also upload a video on the suffering of affected people. The magnitude of land slide is so big that it is not going to burst in near future. I think government should chalk out a strategy with the help of local population to turn this disaster into opportunity.
