It's about touching others' lives. You point about work is valid IF that is what people truly strive toward in the modern world. It's mostly a motivation to gain a vast amount of wealth very quickly in order to show off. The after effects of the process is temporal not revolutionary. IF however you work your whole life toward changing some key aspect of human life that lasts long after you die, then I would say that you would have been truly succesful. Newton made calculus but died a virgin.

But why focus on relationships, given that the people you care about will soon die? If you focus on your work you may be doing something of more lasting importance.

"Theres nothing that we find in many of the characters of art that makes them inevitable objects of concern and even pity. If we do end up thinking of them as noble and dignified, it all has to do with the way theyre portrayed on the stage or on a page. Its the achievement of many artists to lend to people who could be described as losers, emotional compulsives, suicides, murderers, a level of sympathy thats owed but rarely paid to every human."
