  • why the colossus ?

  • 2 reasons - Colossus was the first RN warship to mount a large breech loading gun, and I had (and still have) plans to animate the development of breechloading mechanisms so Colossus had to be first, and secondly - I had the plans (from the National Maritime Museum).

    thank

colosus was built near 1880 ?

  • @druisteen2

She was launched in 1882, but it took another 4 years to get the guns correct, so she commissioned in 1886. Google search for 'Victorian ship models' for a web site giving a lot more information on Colossus.

    thhank

for info the admiral duperé is the first batlle ship whith tourret

  • @druisteen2 Not sure I can agree. The Admiral Duperré, 11,720 tons, was laid down in 1877 and completed in 1883. She is described as a barbette ship. On the other hand, the USS Monitor, was completed in1862. The British built two masted turret ships, Captain (7767 tons, 12" guns) completed 1867 using Captain Cowper Coles turret, and Monarch (8,322 tons, 12" guns) completed 1869. In addition Devastation (9330 tons 4 x 12" guns) completed in 1873.

  • Very nice :) I love these ironclads.

  • You should do one of the titanic the would be sweet!!

  • Quite magnificent!

  • Colossus was the first ironclad warship to carry a 12-inch breech loading gun in the Royal Navy. If you watch my 'gun-deck' video, you can see how slow and difficult it was to reload. The magazines are placed in the bows and stern under a 2" steel deck, and further protected by the coal-bunkers. The expected fighting ranges for these ships was just 1000 yards, so the trajectory is almost horizontal. Thats why Colossus had 18 inches of armour protecting the boilers, engines and gun loading
