This is my trained goldfish the amazing Blackfish and his hungry friend, Orangefish! Watch them swim and do tricks! The black fish is amazing as he swims upside down for food! The orange fish will find leftover food anywhere in the tank and chomp it!

* Note, for those concerned, this goldifsh is not sick in any way neither is the other one. It only does this trick once a day, late at night, and it took weeks of hand feeding it to get it to do this. I fed it a pea the way your do for bladder problems, just in case, but the fish is healthy and not sick and swims normally the rest of the time.

*Note: He only does the trick about 2 minutes in so feel free to "fast forward" .

The long story:

It all started when orange fish would eat the food I dropped in the tank faster than blackfish could get it (their real names are Proctor and Gamble, the black one is Gamble), so I started feeding the blackfish by hand so I could monitor it's food intake. Then one day, as it was nibbling at my clean, fish-ready hands, It quickly and just for a moment did a kind of barrel roll. That night it did not repeat the act, and the next day too, but the day after that, I tried to get it to do it again, I kind of succeeded at getting it on it's back for a second, but only a second. Every day I worked with my fish and now, It's amazing what it can do. I gave it a pea the way you must for bladder problems once I learned from my only comment so far that this might have been a problem. So, I have recently treated the fish (just in case) for possible bladder problems and it seems fine, so we're going to keep practicing. Comments are always appreciated.

  • you can say what you like but I have been keeping goldfish for 25 years, that is a goldfish with swim bladder issues. that is why he swims down and then shoots straight back up to the top...he has gasped to much air into his swim bladder and can no longer right himself. Flake food or floating food will do that, cause goldfish to gulp in to much air.

  • yup.... definately swim bladder i'm afraid.

  • Does he always swim at the surface like that or does this behavior only happen at feeding times? (commercial foods, particularly flakes can exacerbate swim bladder problems, causing floatiness like this at meal times in particular).

  • I'm sorry, but I have to agree that this looks like swim bladder issues to me. It is not normal for the fish to be swimming that close to the surface of the water (regardless of whether it flips over or not). You'll notice that your other fish comes up to the surface for food, but the tail continues to point down toward the bottom of the tank, while your moor's entire body is against the surface. And each time he swims down below the surface, he floats right back up again. cont.

  • Give him a few thawed frozen peas with the outer shell taken off for a few days; that will help his digestive tract. You also might want to add 1/2 a tbl per gallon of water of Epsom salt to the tank. Also, are you doing regular water changes? If not, the nitrates in your tank might be too high which would cause your fish to become ill. 35%+ water changes once a week are essential. Good luck!
