Egyptians have ignored calls for a nationwide strike on Sunday. This has been attributed to heavy security with threats of harsh punishment against striking employees and the pre-emptive 30 per cent increase in wages by President Mubarak four days ago. Inside Story asks if Egyptians tend to stay out of politics as long as there is food on the table or if they feel intimidated by the state.

  • May God help all the Egyptians

  • To zmobasheri: Brought in some Germans instead of Egyptians?!! In fact, Germans have a significant record of blood shed and irradication of human races. You want to "kick out" egyptians the same way Germans "wiped off" jews on the hands of Adolf Hitler? Egyptians have always been and will always remain among the most exotic races on earth. If you met some wrong people during your visit, this is because your eyes picked people who are just like you, DISHONEST. You are what you observe!!

this is all to very sad especially the three hundred that have died during these protest. will there ever be a true reign of peace will there ever be a political leader that is honest and is for the best interest of the people. maybe nt

  • I just came back from a holiday in Egypt.

Man you guys suck! I didn't meet a single honest person out there despite spending 3 weeks touring the country. Man, Egypt would just be the most awesome place if only they kicked out the Egyptians and brought in some Germans instead. Hosni Mubaraks picture was framed more than Saddam was in all of IRAQ! Shit, he's been in power for over 30yrs - What an awesome democracy eh!

  • Right On the money Video!

  • Indeed may God help the Egyptians in their crisis, and may God help their regime to change its ways. Bludgeoning one's people with corruption and dictatorship is wrong in every sense of the way. And the regime should realize its wrongdoings and change its ways, unless they want to face a revolution in the next several years. The Egyptians can only stand for abuse for so long. And if this regime wants to behave like the monarchy before it, its fate will be the same. Insh'allah.

  • Insh'allah.

  • I don't know for a small group of random online people with (as the people in the video say) basically zero support on the ground and only a few websites, they caused a 30% gov't pay raise and showed the heavy-handed security methods of their government, seems like a good start to me.

  • The worst thing that can ever happen to a nation is de-politicization. This is what the bastard Mubarak has done to Egypt!

This is nothing new as dictators all around the world have tried this before. Zia-ul-Haq tried it in Pakistan, and of course Mushi tried to follow it up. But ofcourse, no one has been more successful in depoliticizing a people than Mubarak and his cronies.
