Recuerdos de la Alhambra or Memories of the Alhambra is a staple of the classical guitar repertoire. Written by Francisco Tarrega while he was traveling in the Andalusia region of Spain, the piece uses the idiomatic technique called tremolo. This particular tremolo is played P A M I or thumb, ring, middle, and index. The melody is in the tremolo while the thumb is outlining the harmony. This piece is suppose to evoke memories of the castles and culture of the Moors/Arabs that they left behind in Spain, particularly, Granada.
The Moors ruled Spain for over 700 years and Granada was their last stronghold before the Christians under the reign of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile (via marriage). The Moors also brought advancements in technology, engineering, and art.
