" This building has become my body,
it's bricks my soul come closer "

" You can feel that the sanatorium still lives "

Joseph Lemaire Sanatorium:

- Architect: Fernand and Maxime Brunfaut.
- First stone was laid on 10 august 1936.
- opening 30 september 1937
- The sanatorium was ment for tuberculosis(tbc) patients,
many of the patients worked in the mines.
- During war times, it was used by the red cross.
- there was a capasity of 235 beds
- closed in 1987, there were not many tbc (tuberculosis) patiens anaymore.
- 2009 The sanatorium is beeing reconverted. into
serviceflats, and a home for older people.there are also plans to make a restaurant in there.

We talked with a local (old) farmer about this place.
The sanatorium is located on a hill, in the valley is the small village tombeek.
For 50 years the red lights on the roof of the sanatorium were shining bright"PREVOYANCE SOCIALE" you could see the red lights in whole tombeek.
The farmer found it sad that they werent burning from 1987 anymore.

In the first years of abandonment, there was a guard to protect the stuff inside and protect it from vandalism.
When the guard was gone, locals and other people had stolen al the goods and the heavy vandalism begun.

He told us several stories about people who had strange and haunted experiences in there.....

This is were it started.was our first real exploration back in 01/2004. Almost all footage is from that time, altough we stayed visiting this place in 2005,2007 and for the last time in 02-2008.

  • You always find some of the neatest abandoned places. One of the best things about your videos is you get the history on the places you explore. Nice work!
