One of many echoings w/Gavin at 5 years old.
Gavin trying to learn a word, and ends up turning into echoing. notice half way when he is echoing how he ends up copying the body language and laughing without looking at me. the signing comes in because he starts getting nervous and partially confused but only lasts a couple seconds.
In no means am I frustrated or laughing at him.

For those that are unfamiliar with Echolalia it is the immediate or delayed repeating of information, unconventional word use, unusual tone, pitch, body language, and articulation.
Echolalia occurs in approximately 85% of children with autism who eventually develop speech.

  • I work with autistic children providing ABA therapy and I love to see you still smiling while working with your son. I absolutely LOVE my job and find joy going to work and I know that it can be exhausting and frustrating but all it takes is patience, and you definitely have that. I just want to let you know the amount of respect I have for parents of autistic children more now after working with them. More power to you and I wish you well...

  • He is so beautiful and I just want to say you have such awesome patience - keep it up your doing great!!!! :)

  • I work with a child with autism and I can totally relate to her laughing. I would venture to guess that it is a pretty great excellent way to deal with frustration. The only other options would be to give up or get angry.

It really does start to feel like "Who's on first?" at times.
