This is the filter that I've had in my small pond for a year. The pond is around 500-600 gallons.

With this setup I haven't had any algae bloom, which is normally a typical spring occurrence. I think this is because the gravel acts as a biological filter. And, this is with a large turtle and minnows in it.

I bought the pond plant basket at Home Depot. I put a layer of aquarium gravel in the bottom, put the pump in, then covered it up with more aquarium gravel. The only maintenance I do is to vacuum the top layer of gravel periodically with a large aquarium pump to restore the water flow. Maybe once a year I have to dump all the gravel out, clean it and the little plastic pump screen, then put it all back in.

January 5, 2012 update: Still no algae bloom.
