ladies ladies, its with the frog down, if da the frog is up, water can seep in and settle in the frog, blah blah blah, frost, expansion, cracking blah blah, self praise is no recommendation but i lay up to 1500 - 1800 bricks a day, day in, day out
A brick should be laid with the frog (indent) facing up NOT down.
If it is laid facing down the weight of the brick & courses above is all on the edges. When the frog faces up it is filled with mortar & therefore the weight of the next course is spread over the full width.

One of the oldest brickie arguements. Frog down or frog up. In general I would agree that bricks should be laid frog up but the nature of the brick can have a lot to do with this. In a controlled test at college I bulit 2 peirs one frog up one frog down ensuring the frogs were full on both jobs. Afterwards both piers were tested for lateral strength and constant pressure neither came out any stronger or weaker. Try it yourself
