The Expendables 2 accused of vandalizing bat colonies

The Expendables 2 has been shooting in Bulgaria, and some of the area's endangered animals have suffered. Bat experts have slammed the production for filming in The Devetashka Cave near Lovech, Bulgaria, claiming the bat population has dwindled significantly. Museum of Natural History said the special check conducted after the session showed that at present there are some 8,000 in Devetashka Cave, while last year they were 30 000.

@politologaster Wow that sucks hopefully the bats will be ok but if that's the case how the hell did they get permission to film there in the first place? The people who are at fault here are the government and ecologists who didn't list this habit as a restricted area. You can't blame the film crew for filming in a cave that just happens to have a ton of bats in. If it was a protected area this wouldn't have happened:

@Knight1992Azure It is indeed a protected area and the primary responsibility lies within the state institutions. I am Bulgarian and I need to admit that corruption is a major problem. At the same time, I beleive that this is a motive for rich countries to run some of their businesses in less developed countries- they know that they can buy more for less there. I am sure that there are beautiful scenaries in USA as well, why not shoot the movie there?

As you said its probably cheaper to film in Bulgaria and when does anyone want to pay more than they have to lol? And who knows maybe part of the film will take place in Bulgaria. Still sucks about the bats though :S

@Knight1992Azure Also a stuntman died while filming in Bulgria. That is why, I just thought that the case is indicative how rich counties/companies use money and power in poorer countries and call this "investement", You can see more on my videoclips - TV report with all the havoc that 'The Expendables 2' did in Bulgaria.
