At 18 months old, Kaiden had a couple of major milestones...
He learnt to hold his bottle and feed himself, climb up onto the couch, sit up on his bum on his own and he started to say "Da Da Da".
Kaiden's 9th tooth came through- bottom left, third from the middle.
Also i started to realise that maybe his Sensory Intergration diagnosis may have been a little too hasty...
He was originally diagnosed because he refused to eat fresh food or even to take it from our hand and put it to his mouth. It was also because he appeared to dislike grass, sand and Playdoh.
Since the beginning of the year Kaiden has started accepting things given to him by us and will eat what he sees us eat if we hand it to him. He so far has eaten hot chips, lollies (natural, less sugar kind), the bread from a burger and more recently a Pringle potato chip (just tonight actually- February 5 2009).
Kaiden also has no problems whatsoever crawling across the grass (or what there is of it! Its extremely hot here at the moment and we have water restrictions). He will also play with sand and dirt without hesitation. I also pulled out the Playdoh just a few days ago and he laughed his head off poking his fingers into it!!!
I think that a lot of doctors will jump to conclusions quite a bit, in Kaiden's case anyway... Now this could just be because of how sick he was at birth and they are just trying to make sure they pounce on any worries ASAP. But ive been told he would likely have Cerebal Palsy, Autism, Mental Retardation- NONE of which he does. Late last year i was also told he was showing "warning signs of Autism". This was because he liked to play with wheels and he seemed to be a bit repetitive.
My son is the happiest, mild tempered baby ive ever known. He seeks our approval in everything that he does- a big thing Autistic kids do not do. He shares his toys and experiences with us, often bringing his toys to us to play with him- another big thing Autistic children do not do. With every fibre of my body i KNOW he is neither Autistic nor does he have Sensory Integration. Like the old saying goes, "A Mother knows best".
Im not saying i know more than a doctor does but i do know my child. Im with him 24/7 and i see what he does all day and how he interacts. A doctor only has an appointment time of maybe 30min in which they make their hasty diagnosis- NOT enough time to make informed decisions on such life altering conditions.
Anyway, thats just my son and my experiences!!! And i wanted to share it with everyone who watches my videos :)
Its much more than a joy- its a pleasure! Im honoured to call him my son :)
