For decades, China has exerted great efforts to preserve the culture of Tibet, ranging from Tibetan Buddhism to folk customs.

Pattra-leaf Buddhist scriptures recorded early Tibetan culture.

These cultural treasures were originally written on palm leaves. They are now threatened by the environment.

Experts organized by the Central government have spent the last three years visiting nearly all of the temples in Tibet to help arrange and preserve these scriptures.

Tsewang Gyurme from Tibetan Academy of Social Sciences, said, "Pattra-leaf Buddhist texts are the origin of many Tibetan Buddhist scriptures. They recorded ancient Tibetan languages, drama and folk customs. Collecting and protecting the Pattra culture is of major significance to the study of Buddhism."

Meanwhile, three major restoration projects, including the Potala Palace, are now nearing completion.

Nyima Tsering, official of Three Major relics Repair Group, said, "Ten kilograms of gold has been used in the restoration of the Potala Palace. And 5 million 9 hundred thousand yuan has been spent repairing the Norbu Lingka, restoring over 500 square meters of wall paintings. The whole project has taken six years, and will end on schedule in September."

Folk customs are also being preserved. 87 years old Tsang-chiu is a famous performer of the "King Gesar" epic poem. His songs have been recorded for posterity.

Modern technology is being put to use to protect Tibetan culture.

Experts have developed the first ever Tibetan-language Windows Operating System and a multi-media bilingual electronic dictionary collecting 160 thousand words and phrases. More and more Tibetans can now use Tibetan-language software both at home and at work.

  • China should let the UN or other human rights inspectors see if their occupation is oppressive to Tibetan culture and religion, Otherwise this kind of publicity is just propaganda. China is a juggernaut, apparently too big to be subject to the standards of the civilized world. If it is not too late, the world community should respond to China's lack of compassion with sanctions, and boycotts.China, the world is watching. Do you care?

  • Propaganda. If things r really what the CCP is claiming y not allow UN human rights to independently investigate?

  • Yes, nikkich01, the Tibetan plateau is very high, but many, many Han Chinese have emigrated there to start new lives. For most it takes one week for your body to adjust. I have been there. It took 5 days!

The Tibetan people are captives in their own land for sure and are an ever schrinking minority especially now that the train has begun to bring more each day to settle there. Tibet is beginning to look like most of China. Modern with lots of concrete.

  • My cousing visited China, and was arrested (for holding a banner!), and this was after he first visited and saw with his own eyes, and talked to Tibetans, who told him just this. What do family sizes have to do with human rights? Is this from "CCP's Quick Facts on Tibet?" hahaha.

  • If you admit that you don't know why do you say things like "plenty of cases"? We do know that there are schools in Tibet that teach exclusively in Tibetan. We do know that Tibetans have a larger average family size than the Han.

So ultimately, instead of just shouting alarmist propaganda either visit China or shut up.

  • 90% yes, but that does NOT include soldiers! There are plenty of cases of students being beaten for speaking Tibetan in school, and plenty of cases of forced sterilizations and castrations. Either way, noone really knows, beacause the only people allowed in are pro-china journalists.

  • nikkichi is tibet washed freak

  • What the hell are you talking about? There are still 90% population is Tibetan. Chinese are free to travel to anywhere they like to. Can the American Indian stop other people to live in their places? Grow up. You are confused, my friend. You have been fed with too much distorted information. Or you are just a China hater!

  • Have you been to China? The Tibetan plateau is not someplace people can migrate to. Its height makes oxygen scarce, so people who do not grow up there and are unused to its environment often suffer from altitude sickness and die from it. Massive migration of Han Chinese is not possible because of the environment, it is just another lie cooked up the those who would use the excuse of cultural genocide to split China.

  • Yes, and massive migrations of Han Chinese into the region makes sure that Tibetan culture remains a minority. More Chinese propaganda.
