Students at Davidson College, including Alexis Valauri-Orton, will work to retrofit three elliptical machines in Davidson College's highly trafficked fitness center in order to make them energy-generating. The energy students put into their workouts will be captured and fed back into the building's power supply. The goals of this project are twofold. First, it will reduce Davidson College's carbon footprint by harnessing energy and reducing dependence on outside energy sources. According to ReRev, a "typical 30-minute workout produces enough energy to power a laptop for one hour, or charge a cell phone six times." Perhaps more important is the educational component; when students work out on retrofitted machines they will see how much energy they are generating and gain a more intimate understanding of just what it takes to power their lives.
