  • Really!?! Unbelievable. Convinces me once again that Mario was something of a phenomenon preserving his voice in such form after 30 years or so on stage. In the early 1970s even Corelli's huge voice started to falter (and he started later his career) but not Mario. Such a power and intensity... something to marvel at.

Thank you very much for the info!

  • Del Monaco The Best

  • @sugarbist We are in total agreement. MDM might have embellished Verdi, but it doesn't really detract from his gifts as a tenor.

  • @Pywacket2 Perhaps,MDMshares in a category of vocal phenomenons withCaruso,Volpi,Paoli,Tamagno&Zenatello. His diction, phrasing, voice quality were impeccably beautiful. He was extremely confident"showoff"&had great highnotes.I listened to Vickers&McNiel's"Si Per Ciel"& thought it was terrific.Vickers was a wonderful Otello&I really enjoy his unique mezza voces throughout the opera.I also give credit to Vickers for singing with Von Karajan, whom would pit his entire orchestra against a singer.Enjoy

  • @Pywacket2 Perhaps Del Monaco could be perceived as being a showoff.I have followed him for many years&he really couldn't wait to get out on the stage&start performing. However,MDM was willingly dicipline for the art he loved so much.He would prepare incessantly for days before a performance&would be totally exhausted afterward, sometimes sleeping18to24hrs.Yes he does seem a little self indulgent&absorbed during hisYTinterviews, but he also was very enthusiastic about giving his point of view.Cont'

  • @sugarbist Can't say why. Fine tenor but somewhat of a showoff. My favorite Otello was/is Jon Vickers, a heldentenor but fabulous Verdian. See his Met video of 'Si per ciel marmoreo giuro' with Cornell McNeil here on youtube. Mesmerizing.

  • @Pywacket2 Perhaps Del Monaco was emulating other great Otellos that sing this in a similar way like Paoli,Martinelli,Merli or Zenatello.Certainly though, we do have the benfit of the GREAT Domingo who does respect the music more, but somehow is not up to par with these 5.Otello is not a suttle Role and Del Monaco had at least 3 different interprteations for the role but not really the Esultate. I wonder why?

  • Poussif...

  • Un mito, tuttora infranto. Ascoltarlo è un'emozione unica perché non esistono altre voci in questo ruolo capaci di eguagliarlo.

  • He's extending the lines in a showoff way. Not very tidy or musical. We know he had the notes. He didn't have to ham it up.

  • L'unico e per sempre.
