This started happening after the I downloaded and installed the Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 using Software Update from the Apple menu. This is a very annoying bug, and there is a thread that I replied to on MacRumors Forums. My User name on MacRumors is ouimetnick, incase you were wondering.
Here are two threads about this issue on MacRumors Forums.

  • If updating to 10.6.5 didn't resolve your issue and you had to downgrade - I'd wait until 10.6.6 or until a software update is available that fixes this issue - as it is clearly software related. Some other person on Apple Discussions forum said that reinstalling completely resolved the issue - so clearly this is software related. For those experiencing this stuck trackpad issue follow all what I said below. Reinstalling should fix the issue.

  • @benstones93 If you tap on the trackpad (meaning tap on it, and don't actually physically click it), it fixes the problem. It still happens, and there are numerous threads on MacRumors about the issue. But just tapping on the trackpad seems to fix the issue. I do have tap to click enabled in system preferences FYI. So whether it causes the issue or not, it fixes it every time the trackpad wan't to piss me off.

  • i have it too cant be it from overheating ?

  • @MissRegionrat oh ok thanks

  • Not a fix, per sé, but I did keep doing the recommended updates, and I haven't had the problem in over a month. :) Good luck!

  • @MissRegionRat I have the same laptop too. Were you able to find a fix, MissRegionRat?

  • I have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro but I don't have this issue, but try updating to 10.6.5 as it may fix the issue - otherwise reinstall Mac OS X using your installation disc that came with your Mac. By default when you go ahead and reinstall on an existing installation it simply resets Safari, Mac OS X version, etc to what it was when you first got your Mac - but your applications are still there. Try this first, if not, backup important data and reinstall using Disk Utility on the reinstall disc.

  • I get this like once every 4-5 days and i can easily get rid of it in like 1 minute. I usually just click at random places and swipe expose and stuff and it goes away REALLY quick. You guys should try this. It is because of the software update because i never had the problem before it.
