Ján Levoslav Bella (1843-1936) was an obscure Slovakian composer in the 19th-century recognized more for his religious music than instrumental works. He began writing masses as early as age 16 and often incorporated folk elements into his sacred music. He eventually showed an interest in the latest trends of Romanticism and established connections with Liszt, Brahms, and Richard Strauss. Bella left a modest output of chamber, orchestral, and solo piano music reminiscent of Schumann and Liszt.
