Here we have a comparison of Terry Gilliam's 'Twelve Monkeys' on LaserDisc & DVD

The DVD player is a low end generic player connected via scart. The LaserDisc player is a Pioneer mid-range machine connected via composite.

The TV is a Sony Bravia 40" LCD

The video was shot in HD with a Canon VIxia HF200

In my opinion, the LaserDisc wins in this particular experiment. Regarding resolution, they appear very similar. There are obvious differences in the colours and tones with positives and negatives for both formats.

There really is no comparison on sound, the LaserDisc wins by a mile.

I will be doing a second video with a higher spec DVD player soon which may have a beg effect on these results, but for now LaserDIsc is King!

  • ill be checking out that website. thanks also, have you tried comparing them on an analog circuit television?

the dvd vs LaserDisc would probably be a bit different...

were LaserDiscs built to handle high definition picture? that could be the problem...

  • @static1994 I would love to do a tube TV comparison but I only have a small portable which I use for gaming, I don't think it would be good enough to show the detail.

  • I recently was given some laserdiscs and wanted to know if you could tell me what I should look for in a laserdisk player.

  • @StarBoyJonesProds I'm not really an expert on the Players, but there is lots of advice on the laserdisc forum - retroflix

  • Great video!I love the whole comparison shot of the DVD and Laserdisc..by any chance will you be doing more comparison videos in the future with Laserdisc and DVD?

  • @Condorsat10 I totally agree. 12 Monkeys is a well mastered LD. I think the DVD transfer is pretty good, but I think the DVD player may be letting it down in this case.

  • I think its pretty clear that the DVD versions looks better here.

  • Laserdisc looks better to me

  • @MrAlcazar thanks for clearing that up for me. I hold a belief that aalog surpasses digital, although i have some digital media, Like CDs that are more enjoyable than their analog counterparts...

Nice to know I won't need to worry about region when buying things from britain, like Monty python...

Speaking of Cds, can your LD player play CDs?

I'm not sure what Still/Step is... could you elaborate?

an'87 model was that advanced? why didn't you keep it?

  • I have The Godfather, Scarface, and Saving Private Ryan all on laserdisc. Worth anything...?

  • @static1994 Regions are a dvd component. Because DVD is digital, it can be encrypted so as to prevent piracy. LDs to the end used Optical analog video, that is digitally calibrated. And regarding Pioneer; They made the best players. Even their early models were pretty good. My first player could do still/step on CLV, two digital outputs, and s-video out. And it was an 87 model too! If only it had Quick turn,

    I would've kept it.

  • Skin tones are always much better and natural on Analog

No matter how well the DVD is transferred...it is a "compressed" image !

  • @MrAlcazar Well, Ive heard that in Japan, they were more fond of Laser disc than VHS, so its not suprising that they would manufacture their own model. Wouldn't the discs apply to the region as well, like with dvd?

I had heard that one of the better players was the Pioneer Elite, but tyhat was just from one source, so im still checking on it. What do you think?

  • Lazer dic dos not have compressed video so it will show beter colors and in fast moving on the screen no blear or edge braking. you should get a progressive scan ld player. its sweet.

  • @static1994 There were HD LD players, they were called "Muse-Hi Vision" players. They were only manufactured in Japan though, and the discs are subtitled in Japanese. You will be hard pressed to find a player though. They're extremely rare and expensive.

  • @aberdurant I agree, the laserdisc is definitley better. How ridiculous is that?
