After the Kipsigis tribe of british colonial Kenya purchased a crank phonograph they became great fans of Jimmie Rodgers.This song is an invitation for him to come and dance with them, and was recorded in Sotik by a young girl called Chemutoi Ketienya and some of her girlfriends

I found an old LONDON 10 inch lp from about 1951 at a yard sale here in Boise Idaho. The music was collected by an englishman named Hugh Tracey who was a coffee farmer in South Africa.

Yes, thanks so much. A friend of mine got this from the Richmond, Virginia library in the late 60's and I taped it and had it for several years. I saw where someone had shared this on Facebook and now I'll do the same - so your yardsale find is going to be heard all over the world!. BTW, there's a great, very sad book about a South African musician who was (incidentally) inspired by Rodgers called "Familiarity is the Kingdom of the Lost," by Dugmore Boetie that some might like.

I first heard this on the John Peel show years ago; BBC seem to be the only people who ever play this! Does anyone know what the lyrics are? From what I've heard, the 'invitation to dance with them' is something of a euphemism!

Have just heard this wonderful song on BBC and started searching around. There are quite a few songs dedicated to Chemirocha posted on The South African Music Archive Project, if you're interested. Thanks for posting...isn't it just great!
