This time-lapse movie by Fraser Gunn, captured by a camera equipped with a fisheye lens, shows the region of the south celestial pole (SCP) in the night sky as seen from Mt. John beside Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. The movie shows the passage of a complete night from dusk on the 29th to dawn of the 30th January 2011 in the space of 32 seconds. Notice the broad band of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds (nearby dwarf galaxies) as the stars spin around the SCP. The crescent Moon rises at 19 seconds with Venus below at 22 seconds. The lights flashing around the landscape are cars driving on State Highway 8 around Tekapo township at centre.
Most of the good stuff is in the south.
