It's one thing to read about history, but its much better when you can hear it form those who lived it. Hastings Street in Detroit was the center of African American culture in Detroit from 1930s through the early 1960s. Listen to those who tell the story from first hand experience.
Nice post. I really enjoyed it.

My great uncle died back in 2004. The stories he told me about searching for "weenie butts"during the great depression.

Anyone out there recall the recorded interview broadcast by WDET,early 80's, an older gentleman recalls Hastings Street & Black Bottom, from the 20's-50's? Few things were as riveting and firing of the imagination as that interview was! Some one must have a copy of it some place! It was like someone filling in all the gaps of the Detroit Counts "Hastings Street Opera"-"Joe's Record Shop/He got everybody in there except T-Bone Steak".
