Pappy O'Daniel is my great uncle. Weird, we both did music... take a listen to mine. Also, he reminds me of my father, Greg O'Daniel.... they really look the same in person and in the portrayal of "Oh, Brother. Where Art Though".
Feel free to say hello anytime... I'll pass the biscuits.
Sincerely,
Derrick O'Daniel

I saw the real Pappy Lee-O campaign for governor of Texas [sic] for the last time when I was a kid. He was on a fire truck, going to "put out the fire in Austin." My dad told me about him campaigning with a broom or a midget in previous campaigns. The meeting was on the court house square under dim lights at night. Very memorable. He was accompanied by a band that played the theme song "I Like Country Music" ("Please pass the biscuits, Pappy.") I still remember the lyrics.

"Aint you gona do some politican', Pappy?"

The Coens took considerable liberties with history in transplanting W. Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel to Mississippi. In truth, O'Daniel was Governor of Texas from 1939-1941. In a special Senate primary election in 1941, he defeated LBJ, the only time Lyndon ever lost an election. Pappy served in the Senate from 1941-49, succeeded by none other than Lyndon. He gained fame advertising his flour on a radio show featuring "The Light Crust Dough Boys." The signature tune: "Please Pass the Biscuits, Pappy."
