Red-Tailed Hawk swoops, attack, tears prey, drops it

This video shows a red-tailed hawk swooping to catch prey, then tearing the prey apart, beginning to eat it and then dropping it. It appeared that in spite of all this the prey (possibly a chipmunk or small squirrel) got away.

The video begins with a large hawk in a tree. It appeared that some crows had been harassing it and the crows could still be heard. It flew to another tree. At that time, I lost it and did not photograph part of the sequence (but another person described it). Although I lost it, I did capture the before and after.

The hawk had flown to a telephone pole, perched on it, and then swooped across the area and caught a small animal. This was done in one swift swoop.

The hawk then flew back to the original tree with its prey and began to tear it apart. Then it dropped it. It appeared to be fairly large and reddish. It may have been a chipmunk or small squirrel. The drop is shown in slower motion at:

The hawk dropping the animal is shown in two places: at 2:12 and in slow motion at 3:06 minutes. It is more visible in slow motion and the shadow also shows up.

Although I missed filming this swoop, I had another one filmed of a hawk swooping down after prey, so this is shown at the end.

**The red tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, is a large powerful bird. It can weigh around 2-4 lbs. and has almost a six-foot wingspan. They have a sharp, strong, powerful beak and curved talons. They tear prey apart with their beaks. The red tails of the hawk showed up several times.
