NASA's SOFIA flying observatory recently completed the second series of envelope-expansion flight tests with its telescope door open. The SOFIA is now fully cleared for astronomy missions at altitudes up to 45,000 feet and telescope elevations up to 58 degrees. After installation and checkout of remaining systems, the airborne observatory will begin infrared astronomy missions late this year.

  • @Misio0o0 The infamous sound is made by the chase plane pilot who is using an oxygen mask and is reporting to the observatory and ground crew about the door's status...lol

  • I worked on a C-141 called Galileo, did the same thing...

  • @qexec1173 This aircraft is a flying observatory, SOFIA stands for "Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy". It will fly at a high altitude in order to avoid problems that ordinary observatories have with haze, smog, clouds, etc. This video was showing in flight testing of opening the door which covers the telescope.

  • @Misio0o0 lol just noticed that too...I mean obviously it's the pilot's breathing mask but that's still pretty funny :D

  • @AaronO220 research into air planes. I think this one is to gather data on what happens when the fuselage is breached. In turn, people can design planes to withstand such damage better.

  • whats this for

  • but will it blend?

  • @Misio0o0 cause the plane from where the man made the video is a little jet ... for wars and so on ;D and then you always have to use a mask to breath... and that sounds like this :D

  • 0 G Test also Man that must be a flyin SpaceLab.
