This footage is intended to help viewers identify Desert Parsley (Cympterus panamintensis), a commonly-used host plant for Indra Swallowtails out in the deep Mojave Desert mountain ranges. This footage was shot in the Granite Mountains near Apple Valley, California on April 3rd, 2009
Land development is one of the biggest causes of permanent local butterfly population loss. However, rainfall and other factors have a lot to do with yearly butterfly counts, too, especially in arid places like southern CA. Butterflies will be much more numerous after one or two wet years, and usually much fewer in a drought. Fortunately, they have diapausal mechanisms for surviving adverse times, so a lack of butterflies in bad times doesn't always mean
Beautiful butterlies, love the swallowtails! I hate living in this world where so much of our wildlife is being hurt. Any idea what the populations of these butterlies are like? I don't see the butterflies out here like I use too.
Thanks so much for the view and kind words =) Cheers!
