  • No a webcam will not work, a webcam picks up a much larger portion of light rather than the wiimote which only detects IR, so it will not work.

  • Sure, but the wii remote infrared camera has a resolution of 1024x768 (most webcams you'll get today are maybe 800x600, but for one the price of a wii remote, it'll be 640x480, and it won't be wireless either.) Another benefit is that the wii remote camera has a refresh rate of 100 frames per second, whereas most webcams have to struggle to get 30 frames per second. These advantages make the wii remote far and away the best choice for this application.

  • @therevengeofsaladboy you could put an IR filter on the webcam lens

  • CoooooooooL

  • yes, but it'll come with a much lower perfomance/smoothness...

  • Dude, it's called not everybody can afford that. and also this is a lot more fun! :D

  • Look more closlier! There is no swivel for tablet mode. It is a genuine IR tracking system. I am currently trying out this setup myself. I haven't managed optimized the Wiimote position yet, but it does work.

  • Oh wow thanks for that, thats a pretty interesting application, I'm surprised the webcam can identify the IR over the visible lights. Good stuff!

I imagine it wouldn't work in a normal surrounding though.

  • actually there is an app which lets you use a regular webcam, and ANY LIGHT SOURCE, be it visible or IR. as long as it is significantly brighter than the sourroundings it works

    check
