Healing Children School & Orphanage - Busiiro Village, Uganda

I spent 2 weeks working with the Healing Children School & Orphanage and their beautiful 400 children in a small village 7 hours from the capital city of Kampala (Uganda). This video is an introduction to the orphanage and a tour by its Founder, Tom Bagoole.

While I was visiting Healing Children School, I was also producing a report for UKHF - UK Friends of Healing Focus. UKHF is a UK registered charity devoted to supporting orphaned, vulnerable and street children in Uganda. They have been working in partnership with Healing Children School and Orphanage since 2008 and will be making their fourth trip to Uganda in February to deliver crucial supplies and provide extra support on the ground.

I was lucky to travel for 5 months across 14 countries on the African continent and these were my most cherished and rewarding weeks of the voyage. My primary focus aside from working and playing with the children was to work with the school's founder, Tom, and his staff to help produce solutions to the many problems they are faced with. These children are primarily orphaned by HIV/AIDs and have very challenging home environments with their foster care. Aside from addressing the short-terms needs of the school (e.g., books, nutrition, regular attendance, uniforms, physical repairs of the school, unsupportive foster parents, etc.), we worked hard on identifying multiple ways to start generating consistent cash flow to support the school and develop more self-sufficiency (e.g., pig and poultry farming, agriculture, 2nd hand clothes, micro-finance projects, etc). I represent the school's donors in the United States and Europe. I dedicated myself to helping develop a realistic business plan to address short, mid and long-term goals as they tackle problems one by one. I lived and slept in the village with the Founder's Father and family which was an amazing experience and enabled me to really develop trust within the village which really does not receive foreign visitors . I am committed to the organization and its children and am already planning my next trip in addition to mobilizing more support back home!
