@fizzlejibbs i know in Europe they often put lights on a mainroad if the crossing is right by the road with an arrow pointing in the direction of the crossing-do they do that in the US.

First of all, there is 30 seconds warning time starting when the crossing is activated until the train enters the edge of the road. Second, all crossings that have flashing lights will have a pair aimed at side roads or other atypical installations. Third, if the trucker would have continued and crashed through the other gate, that would have been better because all gates have shear bolts that allow the gate and casting to pivot on the king pin.

he try to back up, he couldnt see the train coming or hear it ? o well.

@PlaygroundJoe Correct...I'm quite aware. The lights are attached to the mast and gates. I also know for a fact that the lights flash for only a few seconds before the arms come down..Making a right turn off a highway, these lights would not be very visible.
