Plot Cliffnotes-style:
Manny, Emma, and Alex begin to recognize the important roles their mothers play in each of their lives after experiencing different types of abuse from their fathers. To them, these women are "angel[s] in disguise."
A more detailed explanation:
Manny - experiences sexual abuse from her father. He finds out she's pregnant with his baby, but before he can unleash any more of his abuse Manny tells her mother what's been going on. Mrs. Santos intervenes, acting as an "angel in disguise" to her scarred daughter.
Emma - experiences emotional abuse from her stepfather Snake. She and her mother can sense that he's being unfaithful so after a long night out Spike gets up the nerve to confront her husband about his possible transgressions. She eventually reveals to Emma that she wants to forgive Snake. Emma recognizes the importance of her mother's decision in that forgiveness means patching the family she loves back together. Spike's ability to work things out thus makes her Emma's "angel in disguise."
Alex - experiences physical abuse from her mother's boyfriend Chad. After having left, Alex returns to confront Chad and possibly make amends. Before entering the apartment she thinks about what he's done to her and how her mother cannot protect her because she has also left due to Chad's violent behavior. When Chad calls Alex into his room she realizes his apologies are fleeting and that he will probably never change. Just when Alex feels trapped by the situation, her mother -- or "angel in disguise" -- has Chad arrested, saving Alex from "that one last cry."
In the end all three begin to feel they are starting a new and better chapter in their lives as a result of their mothers' protective instincts.
Lol, sorry that was so long. My 10th grade English teacher was always pretty intent on getting us to learn how to write those boring ass essays on the use of literary devices in works and how to properly integrate quotes MLA-style; hence my tendency to quote lyrics and be rather wordy in my plot outlines, haha.
Production facts:
I tried as much as possible to make Manny, Emma, and Alex's stories parallel what's happened to them in the real Degrassiverse. Emma's is pretty spot on but I obviously had to make some adjustments with Manny and Alex. Being that their mothers would never win "Mother of the Year" in the real world, I had to portray Ms. Nunez and Mrs. Santos in a MUCH better light in part by portraying Chad and Mr. Santos as pretty despicable monsters. So sorry to all you males out there. I promise I'm not some fem-Nazi!
