To Whom It May Concern (Medical Negligence from the NHS)

Five years ago I was seriously overcome with sciatica and was unable to walk for several months. After waiting for and seeing various doctors I was told I did not need an operation and to exercise. My level of pain has been up and down ever since and I have spent many hundreds of pounds on just about every other kind of treatment available outside the NHS.

Last spring (May, 2010), I was again seriously stricken with sciatica and my life once more came to a complete halt. I was once again unable to work, walk and function. I contacted the NHS, waited weeks and months just to speak with different staff from different branches and hospitals.

I was finally given an MRI scan in Glasgow on September 15th, 2010, already enduring 4 months of agony. I was told to wait for an appointment to talk with Dr ******, a surgeon in Glasgow, which was finally given for Dec 5th, 2010 another 3 months of daily pain and suffering, and then as a final insult, changed without informing me to January 18th, 2011, an additional month and a half of unacceptable waiting time.

The whole time I was stuck at home in constant agony, unable to work, walk or go any where; my entire life put on a complete halt. My complaint is of a profound and complete negligence of the NHS. I am now on MONTH SEVEN of being in serious pain, not working, offered nothing but various pain killers from GP's and the vague possibility of surgery which never seemed to manifest. Month seven of feeling completely ignored, forgotten, and neglected as a human being. I am a tax payer and human being. I am tax payer with the right to medical care from the NHS, but I have been treated as nothing more than a number on a piece of paper, and something which can be put aside.

Today, one day before my appointment with Dr *****, my designated surgeon, I receive a two sentence letter from his office saying nothing more than that he thinks I would benefit from an operation.

WHY did it take seven months for the NHS to send me a two sentence letter, all the while knowing I was in physical agony and required this procedure? I do not accept that the NHS did not have the ability, resources or people power to tell me this sooner. I honestly have to say that I feel completely let down and am totally disgusted with the neglect I have experienced. I have the right to voice my opinion and feel it is my duty as a British citizen to question the way in which I was dealt with.

I have suffered over seven months of extreme pain that could have easily been avoided if the NHS was not so incompetent in dealing with this matter. Seven months of my life being completely put on pause, to think about and realize the neglect that I was experiencing. I only hope that we can all learn from this so that these situations can be avoided in the future. Ask your self how you would feel if this happened to you. Realize that it could happen to any of us, and possibly happens to tax payers all the time. Since all of this I have had to stop working, give up my apartment in Glasgow and go live with family in Perthshire. Now I have to drive 120 miles to Glasgow and back with severe sciatica to speak to doctor for a few minutes.

How would you feel to be in such pain, for so long, uninformed and neglected?

As a tax payer and citizen of the United Kingdom I demand thorough investigation, acknowledgement of my being so mishandled, rapid treatment and a sincere apology.

Yours painfully,

  • Chi-kung (exercies for health and relaxation) will also work. It uses the same internal medicine as acupuncture, and can often be cheaper. Word to the wise, if you want good medical care anywhere you are you have to pay for it. It is the way of capitalism.

  • I've suffered from sciatica for 15yrs (I sympathise with you by the way it is so so painful) at first I was receiving pain relief injections every six months for the first couple of years, which did help quite a bit, but now because I am registered disabled due to other health problems, and will never be able to return to work, they say it's not worth the money for the treatment :-( I'd be really grateful if I could have the details of the acupunturist you used please? Thank you! ~Peace~

  • @MrAndrewUK pfff an MRI some might ask? ive asked two diferent docs for this. one plain ignored me and nearly got punched and the other felt my physio was helping as i was mobile during the day, so no MRI.

  • 7th month with sciatic pain. physio this whole time, hasnt helped. doctor will not give me anything stronger than codeine, doesnt help.

get pain soon after i go to bed, it takes 1-2 hours to get to sleep, i sleep for no more than 2 hours at a time. have to get up and walk around for atleast 45 mins before my pain eases enough to go back to bed... rinse and repeat.

once i get up and moving (takes 45 mins) im okish. when i c doc or physio i seem ok, they arent bothered. it gettin me down :(

  • I had the same problem in the States. I was never given any kind of pain medicine and was billed several thousand dollars which was fortunately mostly covered by insurance. My ordeal lasted nearly ten years.
