Today, an increasing number of military system architects are designing 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) into their real-time embedded applications.

Commercial markets are driving technology innovation in order to service Internet-savvy consumers that demand 24/7 connectivity. As a result, many high-bandwidth network interface cards (NIC) exist and it is tempting to integrate these commercial solutions into defense applications. But it's not enough to simply grab these broadly aimed solutions right off the shelf.

There are unique challenges to address when designing real-time systems for defense applications.
