The Faces of Medical Errors...From Tears to Transparency
The film is the first in a series of educational stories that address several critical health care issues:
1) Prevention of medical errors
2) How providers and institutions respond when our care has caused harm
3) The important role patients and families can take in their care
The cases highlighted in our educational series were chosen because they illustrate events that are still too common and because they provide significant learning opportunities for improving the systems in which we work. Each film walks viewers through actual cases, embedding facilitated discussion points in each story that encourage viewers to analyze and reflect upon ways in which they can improve care in their own health system. By giving a voice to these patients and thei r families, we seek to ensure others do not suffer similar outcomes.
When patients are harmed by medical error, it can be devastating for them and their families. How we respond to these events defines who we are as individuals, organizations and our professions as a whole. Open and honest communication between caregivers and their patients and families starts the process of healing and closure for both the patient and the caregiver.
And finally, our educational series will teach consumers how they can take a more active role in their care. It is important patients and families are aware they can become true partners in their treatment, and can provide critical input caregivers may miss.
