Please tell me how this could possibly construed as disrespectful????????????????/

Nice presentation

That's an interesting story timmyboy except for the fact that the "Illiniwek" tribe doesn't exist anymore and hasn't since the 1830's. The Illiniwek were a collection of native american tribes, mostly Peorias. There's actually a lot of evidence that shows the dance was entirely fabricated from various native american dances from around the country.

The Chief logo itself was in no way disrespectful. A far cry from The Braves with their drunk injun. I went to many games and had great times. I will say I don't know that I ever liked the idea of a white guy doing the stuff at halftime however. They could have avoided a lot of trouble using a native.

@Ringo111222 They're saying "CHIEF" duh!
-
Why do people boo? I don't get it.

Some of the best years of my life!! Honestly..this band, this school....SOOOOO PROUD to be an Alumni! Hail to the Orange!
-
@rapmansam 1) spell correctly or I will not take your next comment seriously.
2) I go to the University now, dumbass and I'm in the Marching Illini. Chief was never a mascot, and he was never intended to be the mascot. We were never the Illinois Fighting Chief Illiniweks. We are the Fighting Illini and always have been.
Are you some kind of idiot??
First off, Chief Illiniwek isn't the U of I's "mascot". University of Illinois doesn't have a mascot... The Chief is a symbol to the University...
And as for calling one of the greatest College traditions a dancing pansy, all of the former Chief Illiniweks have been Eagle scouts, and have taken numerous lessons from the Illiniwek tribe on how to capture this dance appropriately and accurately...
So get your story straight before insulting anyone.
