On G1's suggestion, I have done testing using a phone book soaked overnight in a bucket of water.
Three types of ammo tested--standard 40gr. round-nosed solid lead round made by Wolf, Remington Yellowjacket hollowpoint, and Aguila Super Colibri.
There was about 2-3 inches drop at 55-60 feet with the Aguila. This is consistent with the other times I have used it. So it's not the most accurate round due to its lack of propellant. Best used at point blank range (less than ten feet) but will work as long as you account for drop. Scopes would be best for this...
I mis-stated the distances I recommended for each round.
Here they are:
25-30 yards and under only for the Aguila CBs.
35-50 yards for the Yellowjackets HP, and
Past 50 yards Wolf solid 40 grain or comparable round only.
High velocity hollowpoints are good and well but tbh once you pass the 50 yard mark most .22 ammo has lost its zing and will only wound game and lose accuracy making it harder to hit your target.
Conclusion: Don't try .22 over 65 yards for any type of small game. For larger animals (fox, coyote etc) .22 will do in a pinch but aim for the head and don't expect miracles. Best to use the solid 40grain slug for such beasts, and get close-in!
Cheers,
PMZ
