A few days ago, I came up with this version of Amazing Grace after being inspired by Mahalia Jackson on youtube. Technically it's rough but I think it came out with a nice feel. I sure enjoy playing it, perhaps I'll do another take sometime, once it gets smoothed out. I try out some fretting behind the slide (a la Sonny Landreth) but nothing too fancy. The guitar is a "Bay State" parlor guitar from about 1890, I replaced the face around 1979 with the help of Santa Cruz Guitar Co. It's not really a collector's item but it sounds nice! Enjoy, B.

  • Beautiful arrangement and playing! Very soulful.

A couple questions please, what's the lower bout measure? It looks like a 00-size.

    Strings you're using?

I think I had on a set of light gauge Martin Elixirs. How do I measure the "lower bout"? It has a really wide neck, with I like a lot...about the same as my classical and my 12-string. So I don't have to adapt when switching guitars.

  • Really nice, what tuning are you in, is it standard or some open tuning?

  • @kassemir Open D tuning: D A D F# A D

  • Righteous!

  • @RascalKyng Yep, original neck. I let off the strings if it's going to sit around for very long. Seems to be doing fine. Probably helps that I have it in open tuning a lot of the time.

    Is the neck original?

    or did you reinforce that?

I replaced the face of this guitar in 79 with the help of Santa Cruz Guitars. Set it up for steel then.

I thought Bay States could ONLY take gut or nylon strings...? Bracing is too light...
