It's not really unexpected though. For one, the fifties saw an unprecedented propaganda-campaign not just to slander the soviet-union, but also to associate any and all radical leftist ideals with communism. The effects were very lasting, partially because the two-party system leaves very little room for smaller, less financed groups to become engaged in national politics.

Micheal Moore is actually pretty clever about not calling himself socialist or anything else of that nature. It's ok to have socialist ideals, like democracy, freedom of speech and equal rights, but the moment you actually calling yourself a socialist you get branded a dirty red commie bastard and are hanged from the highest tree.

But I don't see America as an evil empire as does Michael Moore and many on the far, far left. I voted for Obama and think he's doing a fine if imperfect job as President.
